How to Choose University Career
10 things that I have learned as a university student and as a mother:
2/10 – Try a Foreign University
4/10 – Sciences or Humanities?
5/10 – What if I have no idea about what to do?
6/10 – What I want and I like or what I reason I have better job opportunities?
8/10 – What if I “make a mistake”? Descartes or Hume…
9/10 – Take a sabbatical year and travel around the World
7/10 – Do I prefer to fight for a just cause or to earn money?… Know yourself first!
γνῶθι σεαυτόν
“Know yourself and you will know the Universe and the Gods.”
Greek aphorism inscribed on the Frontispiece of the Temple Apollo at Delphi, Greece.
I’ll ask you and it’s probably the most important question I can ask you: how are you? Practical or idealistic, you like to live luxuriously or you’re a globetrotter, live outdoors or home, biorhythm night or day …
This is the fundamental question that you have to ask and answer before choosing a career because only knowing yourself well you will be able to choose what really fits your way of being.
Knowing yourself first, knowing your strengths, but, above all, recognizing your weaknesses, is essential to make the right choice. Think about it before answering, or better, think about it honestly, you will not tell me, so do not deceive yourself, do not try to get an improved response from yourself, be sincere, nothing happens if you do not completely meet “the standard what is expected about you”. Do this exercise alone. Nobody sees you, nobody listens to you, let you go and be honest with you.
Do not choose an office profession if you love to be outdoors.
Do not succumb to the most popular, perhaps your grace is to have a different style.
Do not succumb to the pressure of the environment: family, friends, work opportunities, society, economic powers
Do not try to look good to everyone, not even God could… thus, the best thing is:
Do not be another… just be you.
Do not try to be in a certain way, at the end you will give up so much effort and you will return in a natural way to your way of being.
Knowing how you are you will go very well and do not to deceive yourself. For example, if you liked Medicine but you did not get the middle note to enter in the degree and it’s because you did not study and did not make enough effort because it does not go with your way of being to do so much sacrifice as to be locked in studying … then it is obvious that the best thing is that you have not entered Medicine because it is a very sacrificial grade.
Many people tell me that they would like to have been a doctor, but of these, not a few do not have the way of being that requires being a doctor and, therefore, possibly that’s why they are not, probably for their own good.
Let me help you a little:
There are two ways of being that will influence your career choice, and also in the majority of choices you are going to have to make. These elections will come predetermined by two exclusive binomials:
a) – you are one of those who prefer to choose the career that most satisfaction, pleasure, produces to you (because you get good grades or highlights in it or …) in the short or long term, or
b) – you are one of those who prefer to avoid a degree that can make you suffer, a long or difficult race or that you think is not going to give you good
2- TO DESIRE or NOT TO DESIRE
a) – you are one of those who desires: to pursue a specific career (because you like it, for prestige, for financial compensation) or you want to do it in a particular University or you want to be in a city with a good university environment, for example, or
b) – you are one of those who does not desire: you do not want anything in particular, you have no idea or know what to do and you are “like a cow looking at a train”, that is, as if it were not the thing with you. Maybe you have clear which ones you would not choose (for example: Medicine or Mathematics). Although in this situation, as time runs and something has to end up choosing the nerves will accompany you too.
And when you review how you are, do not forget the fundamental question that you must raise and not neglect:
What makes me happy?
Yes, it is not a topic, if there is something that you like or that makes you happy, if there is an activity that you do effortlessly, that you are naturally good at and flow with it, use it from the compass North to direct your efforts and try to look for a career that will allow you to develop it in some way although perhaps the race itself does not motivate you so much.
Do not lose the North, your North, you have come to this world to be happy, in your hand is the opportunity with the election of the degree, the University, the country and the city that you choose, at this moment, you can achieve it. Do not delegate to anyone, do not waste this opportunity, you have done all the hard work until you get to the exit box where you are now, you have to enjoy, to choose what makes you happier, only you, internally, you know what it is, your life starts now and you ignore until when you are going to be able to enjoy it … take advantage of it!
